      August 10, 1944 Gazette and Daily - RECEIVES SILVER STAR POSTHUMOUSLY
      Pfc George M. Stermer, Mt. Wolf, has been posthumously awarded the
      Silver Star for protecting the advance of his company from attack from
      the rear at the cost of his life, June 15. Pfc. Stermer, a rifleman
      who served in an armored infantry regiment in Africa and Sicily before
      the action in France, was picking off German infantrymen who were
      attempting to cut off the American unit from the rear. Observing an
      enemy machine gun unit being set up, he kept up a continual fire
      against the enemy, keeping the gun crew pinned down until his unit had
      passed safely out of range. He was killed shortly after by enemy fire.
      Mrs. Hawk received word that her husband, Major Ira A. Hawk, was
      killed in action in France July 3, 1944 . From a book: The Armored
