      NAME: LDS ANCESTRAL FILE.
BURIED AT OLD WHITE OAK CEMETARY,
ON ROUTE #92 IN BARBOUR CO., WEST VIRGINIA.

      !FROM TOM, tek108(AT)comcast.net:
Nicholas Sturm was the first or second documented resident in the new town of Westernport (Allegany County, MD) when it was formed in about 1795. He had a blacksmith shop on the corner of Main and (now) Washington Street that he appears to have been renting. The new interstate road of 1785 came into that town and turned at his shop to cross Georges Creek and head up Backbone Mountain towards Morgantown and branching off to Harrison County. This was the main road that drained the VA valleys and southern seaboard as the people moved west after the Revolution.
Further up the road in the area now Westernport the small town was emerging in the early 1790’s under the ownership of one Peter Devecmon who had swooped in and claimed the military lot that the town area would cover. I think Peter was an opportunist, guided by the moneyed people of Georgetown / Alexandria and George Washington’s cohorts that controlled the area that would bear his name. Devecmon claimed the Westernport land in about 1787, and needed to show development and settlement to hold his claim. It didn’t take much—one cabin one settler as I recall. In the first deeds two first settlers—Nicholas Storm /Strum and William King--- are named as location points for the other deeds. I think—the data is unclear—that Strum had a shop on one corner and King had a house across the street. Sturm later had the King house also (deeds B (AT) 60 and B (AT) 221—Allegany county deed records). The lots on that corner become known as Stormes lots and are describe as..” beginning at at a stake near the blacksmith’s shop…” (deed B (AT) 249) –so my guess is that Sturm is a blacksmith.
Parenthetically, Westernport was to be the western port of navigation on the Potomac—Washington’s great plan to use the Potomac as a river west to tie the western lands to the eastern lands. They had hoped for a terminus more westerly, but I think wisdom suggested this was it. So scooping up the lands and making a town there was a good business proposition. Here the westward trek would become land bound and proceed over the Allegany Front by road—recently developed in 1785 or so, and they would hit the westward rivers in Dunkards Bottom, or maybe Morgantown, or the Clarksburg / Harrison Co area. The Westernport development thrived for about 10 years – then almost everyone went bankrupt.
I forget if the Sturm family is represented in the 1790 census data of Allegany Co or not—and for some reason I cannot find my data right now. There is one early Sturm deed, two early Storm(e) deeds, and two other not so early Sturm /Storm deeds in the Allegany co records. Of most interest—Nicholas and Betsey Sturm to John Templeman D (AT) 36. I do not have that one. (Templeman was one of the Washington cronies)
Jacob and Nicholas Storm(s) are mentioned in the patent records on line.
Many people moved thru the area of western Maryland pretty quickly, from about 1790 to 1810 or so. Land in Ohio looked a lot better as the Indian situation cooled down, and many went there, and many into what is now West Virginia.
