      !HE BOUGHT 132 ACRES ON 3 JUL 1729 IN CONESTOGA TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY FROM FRANTZ WORLEY, WHICH HE SOLD TO JOSEPH STONE ON 5 JUNE 1735.


      !HE OPERATED A FERRY ON THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER 2.5 MILES BELOW THE MOUTH OF CONESTOGA CREEK ON THE LANCASTER SIDE TO THE YORK COUNTY SIDE. HE PETITIONED FOR A SETTLEMENT ROAD FROM THE FERRY TO THE INTERSECTION OF PEACH BOTTOM AND YORK ROADS IN 1758. ON BENJAMIN HENRY LATROBE'S MAP (1802)OF THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER, IT SHOWS THE BURKHOLDER FERRY TO BE JUST OFF THE SOUTHERN TIP OF TODAY'S WEISE ISLAND. BURKHOLDER ROAD RUNS FROM JUST EAST OF RED LION TO YORK FURNACE, BECOMING THE FURNACE ROAD JUST WEST OF YORK FURNACE, AND THEN GOING ON BACK AROUND TO THE SOUTHWEST TO AIRVILLE, WITH A RETURN LOOP ON THE DELTA ROAD BACK TO RED LION TO WHERE BURKHOLDER ROAD BEGINS. I WONDER IF THE PEACH BOTTOM ROAD AND YORK ROAD INTERSECTION IS THE MODERN DAY AIRVILLE, AND THE SETTLEMENT ROAD PETITIONED WAS THE FURNACE ROAD FROM AIRVILLE TO WHERE THE FERRY WAS, WHICH WOULD BE JUST NORTH of YORK FURNACE ON THE SUSQUEHANNA.

      !HE FIRST SETTLED IN CONESTOGA TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY. HE PURCHASED LAND FROM JOHN WHEELER IN CHANCEFORD TOWNSHIP, YORK COUNTY, DATED JUNE 19,1736.

      WILL, YORK COUNTY WILLS BOOK C, VOL 1, PG 329. : In the name of God, Amen. Abraham Burkholder Chanceford Twp, York Co, Pa. Yeoman being very sick/weak in body, but of perfect mind/memory thanks be given unto God. Calling to mind the vulnerability of my body, do make & ordain this my last will/testament in manner/form following. I recommend my soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it & my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent state wherewith it has plesed God to ? me in this life. I give devise/disperse debts/dues as I owe in right or conscience to any manner of person or persons, whatever for them their merits/asigns forever of likewise ? make/ordain my s. Henry Burkholder & John Breakbill the sole exe.s of this my last will/testament & I do hereby ??? disallow/revoke all former test.s wills legalized & ? that ? & ? his & not other to be my last will/test. In wit. whereof I have ? set my hand/seal this 2/10/1776. Signed sealed/pub. pronouncd/declared by the said Abraham Borkholder as his last will/test. in the presence of us...Lancaster Co. On the 3/25/1776 bef. me the subscriber personally appeared Joseph Read & James Stuart the 2 subscribing wit. to the within will & on their corporal ? did depose/say that they were present & saw/heard Abraham Burkholder the will ? named sign, seal, publish ...appear 3rd the said Abraham Burkholder dec'd left issue viz John, Abraham, Hnery, the said Christian, Isaac, Geo, Elizabeth intermarried with Geo. Mundorf, Barbara intermarried with Christian Myer & Mary by their conveyance duly executed/bearing the date 5/2/1777 for the consideration therein mentioned did grant bargain sell...And Whereas the said Henry/Sarah Burkholder by their indenture bearing date the 6/9/1777for the consideration therein mentioned did grant bargain...unto Joseph Reed ...the said deed entered in the office for recording.
